Circulatory System
Why is it important for me to learn about the circulatory system? Below the South Carolina Department of Education feels that you should know the following information:
SC State Standard - Academic Foundation
1.4 Research common diseases and disorders of each body system (prevention, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment).

Closure: Let's Connect the Dots - padlet.com/lwill/HST3
We have just built the major arteries of the body. Last year, we learn about vital signs and each of these major arteries as they relate to blood pressure and pulse/heart rate. As a refresher, let's see what you remember now that you have anatomically built them out of clay.
On the padlet, type in as much as you can remember for the vital sign you were given. We will review each statement to see which ones are correct and which ones need tweaking.

Just a quick review of the direction of blood flow which we learned last year during the Vital Signs Unit. You should already know all of this information.
Wednesday - Quiz!
Be able to identify the major veins and arteries we have built out of clay. It we have labeled it, you need to know it!
11/19/14 Today's Objective: How does our heart beat and what are the components of blood? |
|
|
|
An animation of a single heart beat and how it is represented on an EKG. Variations in the PQRST patterns can be used to diagnose disease and/or damage to the muscles of the heart.
|
Think back to last year and the Laboratory Assistant Skills Unit. We learned about hematocrit (HCT). Do you know understand how this relates to the components of blood?
|
Today's Objective: How do we set up for an EKG? (Medical Assistant Skill) |
|
Today's Objective: Set up a patient for an EKG test.
12/4/14 Warm-up: write the Q & A in your notes.
1. Trace the path of the electrical conduction in the heart.
2. What 2 things does the PQRST complex tell us?
3. The atrial / ventricle depolarization phase corresponds w/ what regarding the
complex and b/p?
4. The ventricle repolarization phase corresponds w/ what regarding the complex and b/p?
As a class, review 12 lead set-up from last class prior to entering the lab.

For class today each of you will set up the leads for an EKG test.
While you wait for your turn, in the lab you are to read chapter 10 "The Other Side of the Tracks" beginning on page 77 through chapter 14 "Helen Lane" ending on page 109.
If you have not reached chapter 9 in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks then please pick up where you left off and read as much as you can in order to catch up.
12/8/14, Today's Agenda:
1. Using the iPads, take the Henrietta Lacks Chapter 10 - 14 quiz on Edmodo.
2. When finished use the iPads to copy the M - N Word Part list for this week's quiz on Friday by looking at the list under the Health Science 3 Medical Terminology page.
3. After looking up the meaning of the word parts and documenting them in your notebook return the iPad to the cart (be sure to plug it in please), go to the lab to sit and read chapters 15 - 19 of Henrietta Lacks, starting on page 110 and ending on page 151. You will have an assignment over these chapters in Wednesday's class. Take with you to the lab your EKG step by step guide if you have not completed this class assignment yet. I will continue to walk students through setting up an EKG while you read individually.
12/12/14 Today's Objective: Discuss common circulatory system pathologies.
|
|
Heart Bypass Surgery briefly explained. Atherosclerosis can lead to heart attacks in arteries that supply the heart with oxygenated blood. This can be one treatment option to prevent heart attacks from occurring or after a heart attack as occurred.

Circulartory System Pathology Presentation Project
You are going to be assigned a Circulatory System Pathology Project. Your project will be to create a Weebly page for a given pathology. You will have all class today to research the necessary information for your pathology using an iPad. Friday, we will go to the computer lab for you to add/create your Nervous System Pathology page. A sample page will not be provided for you. You all are responsible seniors/juniors. Be sure you have thoroughly included everything listed below. Be sure to be creative (10 points). Be sure to proofread for typos (-3 per typo). Be sure to cite your resources (-10 if not cited). Finally Circulatory System Weebly is due Friday, December 19th. You may work on it over the weekend at any location that has the Internet by going to www.studentweebly.com and logging in.
DO NOT CREATE A NEW WEEBLY!
I will not have the sit to view it so it will result in a zero.
ADD A PAGE TO THE WEEBLY YOU HAVE ALREADY CREATED.
Here is the information you need to research:

Here is the information you need to research:
- Etiology - what causes the abnormality and what is structural wrong/affected? 5 points
- Epidemiology within the United States (how prevalent/common is this and in what population/age groups), 5 points
- Signs and Symptoms, 5 points
- Explore 2 possible treatment options and how each works, 15 points
- What are the side effects of each treatment? 15 points
- At least five pictures in a slideshow with educated caption for each picture, 10 points
- Is there a non-profit organization that raises money to fund research for that pathology or a support group? If so...
- Name of organization, 5 points
- How much money do they raise/contribute a year? 5 points
- What does that money go towards? 5 points
- How can someone make a donation or support? 5 points
- Do they have special fundraising events or support groups, if so what are they? 5 points

If you have finished reading Henrietta Lacks through chapter 18 you may use an iPad to begin research for your Weebly. If you have not, you need to finish reading first. You have had three class periods to read three chapters (4.5 hours). We will have a quiz over chapters 15 - 18 on Monday, 12/15. There is no excuse to not have it finished.
