Watch this video as the efficiency of a non-smoker's lung is compared to the efficiency of a smoker's lung. Note the difference in the amount of inflation between the two.

Lesson #2 - Physiological Effects of Tobacco

Alveoli - air sacs in our lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged; they have to be elastic to allow this action to occur. Damage from tobacco chemicals destroy the alveoli which leads to emphysema.

Tar in tobacco smoke can build plaque within the arteries which will decrease the ability of blood to flow through them to deliver oxygen to our body tissues and brain.

Decreased blood flow to the brain can lead to a stroke.
Decreased blood flow to the coronary arteries which feeds the heart muscle with oxygen can lead to a heart attack. |
