Unit 2 Essential Question: What major roles and responsibilities do ATCs carry out?
To answer this you need to know three things:
- What are Emergency Action Plans (EAPs)?
- How do you spine board an athlete?
- What is a PPE, describe the clearance process?
- What can ATCs do to legally protect themselves?
Why is it important for me to learn about roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer? Below the South Carolina Department of Education feels that you should know the following information, please highlight this standard in your syllabus:

- 5.1. Analyze legal responsibilities.
- 5.2. Define malpractice, liability, negligence, assumption of risk, and informed consent.
- 5.3. Identify behaviors and/or practices that could result in malpractice, liability, and/or negligence.
- 5.4. Identify duties of sports medicine providers according to regulations, policies, laws, and legislated rights of patients.
- 5.5. Contrast scope of practice among regulated healthcare professionals, students, and other individuals.
- 5.6. Recognize and explain the standards for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality.
- 7.1. Explain the importance of appropriate equipment maintenance, such as: player equipment and sports medicine facility modalities.
- 7.2. Identify environmental risk factors associated with specific activities of the physically active. Demonstrate the ability to determine unsafe environmental conditions using a sling psychrometer/wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) device, lightning detector, heat index, flash-to-bang method, and wind chill factor.
- 7.3. Practice infection control procedures. -Apply appropriate use of standard precautions for infectious diseases as established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
- 7.4. Explain personal safety practices to include hygiene, sanitation, body mechanics, and ergonomics.
- 7.5. Maintain a safe environment for participants in athletic facilities/venues and comply with safety signs, symbols and labels.
- 7.6. Construct an emergency crisis plan for the sports medicine setting(s).
- 7.7. Practice fire safety related to a healthcare setting.

Create an EAP for the BCHS Athletic Facility of your Choice.
Use your book as a resource, follow the example EAP for the Stegman Coliseum at The University of Georgia. You must include AT MINIMUM the following:
1. ER Personnel and each's responsibility (25 points)
2. ER Communication (25 points)

Most health care professions have their own set of "code of ethics" for professionals within the given field to follow. The code of ethics help provide what actions a "reasonable prudent" person would perform. Following the code of ethics for your health care profession will help prevent legal issues from arising during your career.

Promotion of Safety Skits
Students will create a skit highlighting the at least two of the three key aspects of promotion of safety for health care workers.
- You will work in assigned groups to create a skit that highlights at least two of the three aspects of safety by creating a real life example and acting it out; your skit may take place in the classroom or lab (Body Mechanics, Ergonomics, and/or Fire Safety).
- You will have ONE CLASS to prepare; be creative!!! This will be presented to the class on Friday for a grade, we do not have the time for this to take up another class period.
- You must have at least two props to use/demonstrate the appropriate behavior (i.e. extinguisher, MSDS sheet, etc).
- You must turn in on Friday:
- Script (typed or handwritten)
- Each group member must have at least 4 lines
- Character names/roles
All skits will be recorded, however, the best skit will be placed here on the Weebly.
